Featuring only 20 items who spend their time relaxing and showing their Diabetic Tan Lines. Created between highs and lows by @thediabeticsurvivor
A bit of context, because 2021 was peak NFT everything: Diabetic Tan Lines was 20 hand-drawn characters, each relaxing and showing off the tan lines diabetes tech leaves behind — the pump-site marks, the sensor shadows, the little map of adhesive that anyone living with this recognises instantly. It was half art project, half in-joke for the community.
The intention behind it mattered most: royalties were set up to go to #insulin4all. If the whole NFT moment was going to happen anyway, at least some of it could point at the fact that people are still rationing and dying for lack of affordable insulin. That contrast — speculative digital art on one side, a basic-survival crisis on the other — was sort of the point.
It didn't take off, in all honesty — the collection didn't sell the way I'd hoped, and it raised little. But I don't regret making it. It was the first of its kind in the diabetes space, it said something I meant, and not everything has to succeed commercially to be worth doing.
